It took a near tragedy for me to even want to get to know God as an adult. Why are we so stubborn? Why do we have to push the envelope?
As a little girl who went to church on Sundays and recited mindless prayers I was a tiny bit obedient because I had no choice and God was scary. He was not my friend. As an analytical, young teen I rebelled against the whole idea of being under God’s thumb just because it’s what hippie girls did back then.
That little girl learned all the religious rules and rituals. This adult has finally begun to learn about the relationship God wanted with me all along, that religion got in the way of.
Red tape has always muddied the waters, hasn’t it?
If it doesn’t horrify you that I grew up in the crazy Italian family that owned the corner bar, and that I could blow a perfect smoke ring by the age of ten, we may have a little in common. If it does horrify you, I promise I don’t use crude language and tasteless humor in this blog 🙂
If you feel like you don’t fit in a church setting we have that in common, too. I felt that way for many years. But I learned that if you actually give “those people” a chance they will become your most supportive and loving family ever, no matter how bad you or your relatives think you are. You can check out my church online, like most churches these days. I will share the link to DC3 and New Day, (NDCC) below
Be realistic. In every part of your life you will have to deal with people you don’t like, much less love. Churches are no different. Any time you get a group of people together there will be friction, so don’t hold churches to a higher standard just because we’re Christians. Because, guess what? We’re all works in progress! NOBODY is finished.
Deep Creek Community Church is all about “REAL LOVE, REAL PEOPLE.” and I do love my church family. I am so blessed with the leaders we have, the group of women I fellowship with every Monday night, and the growth that is taking place here as we speak. God is moving in our church and community.
Another blessing in my life was being invited to New Day Christian Church by a patient of mine in the hygiene chair so many years ago. She went to great lengths to reach out to me a few months later when she came back to the office and I was out on an injury. She was disappointed I had not shown up at New Day. She wrote me the most touching letter I just had to respond to her. We became friends. And I did take her up on her invitation, after that near tragedy I referred to above!
It took me a year and a broken back before I finally made it, but I went. And that was the beginning of my true Christian walk. It’s been three steps forward, two steps back, ever since, lol. But I was baptized for real at that church, in July of 2010. Slow but steady growth since then.
God has put some amazing people and circumstances in my path to get me back. He never stopped pursuing me. My whole life. And the series of large and small miracles along that path boggle my mind when I consider them all. You know I didn’t see them as miracles while in the midst of them. We are all numb to the moments that flit by us, amazing moments that prove God’s love for us. His never-ending presence and intercession. We are blind.
There’s this collection of books called the Bible that, together, tell the whole story of God and His people, from the very beginning. It’s not arranged in order, although you can read a chronological Bible. But most people don’t read it at all because it’s so hard to understand, right?
Try the Daily Audio Bible website or app. I love that God’s Word is being read to me and unraveled for me by a knowledgeable Bible scholar who knows how to make it all come alive. You can read along, too. I am beginning my second year of listening and I will never stop now. I will listen and read along, over and over.
I love sharing what I am learning. I must! I will burst at the seams if I don’t!
If you want to learn with me, please do two things right now:
- Go to https://dailyaudiobible.com to have an amazing story-teller narrate – and teach – the whole Bible in twenty minute bites every day. You will have heard the whole story in a year. And you will understand it! Because Brian helps you connect the dots. (You can watch DC3 and NDCC online, too. You will learn so much from my local preachers and teachers!)
- Subscribe to my blog so you get notified when I post something new.
I didn’t start learning until 2009, so no worries if you know nothing about anything about the Bible. Please just enjoy listening to Brian Hardin read it to you, enjoy my posts, and share your thoughts. Brian’s wife and daughter narrate the Chronological version. His son narrates the Kid’s version. Five minutes per day in the New Testament. It’s also available in several languages.
And for the true beginners, that might have a dusty Bible sitting on a book shelf, here’s a tip on how to read and decipher the “address” for a Bible verse:
Num 6:24-26 = the book of Numbers, Chapter 6, verses 24, 25, & 26. It’s really easy if you just download a Bible app. There are many, but most popular is @BibleGateway.com or @Bible.com, aka YouVersion.
The Bible is really a manual for living a full life that will benefit others as much as yourself and your immediate family. If your full and busy life still feels like something is lacking, I can guess that’s because it’s all about you and your crazy, little world. Nothing like getting out of your comfort zone to spice things up a little. 🙂
The Word of God is alive, dynamic, and relevant. Even in this world, today. Especially today!
God’s love for us is a never-ending source of peace, comfort, and deep down joy that cannot be taken from you. Not ever. In these uncertain times in our world wouldn’t it be nice to have an anchor somewhere?
I hope you will consider starting a new, really easy, daily habit of listening to the Bible every day for twenty minutes, because it really makes God smile to have our attention. And it’s how we get to know Him. It’s how He speaks to us. The more we learn about God’s character, the more we want to know. You will develop an appetite for more knowledge at some point down the road.
Feel free to shoot me an email with any questions if you’re too shy to post a comment.
